Postponement FAQs

On December 30, 2017, the Douglas County School District (DCSD) Board of Education made the decision to postpone the opening date of Apex Community School from August 2018 to August of 2019.  

This decision was based on Apex falling short of a contract benchmark for the 1st enrollment window.   Given that the homes surrounding Apex are not yet occupied, the Apex Board of Directors knew enrollment, especially during this 1st window, would lag.  Due to the continued construction surrounding Apex and the growing population, the Apex Board of Directors is confident that the school will officially open in August of 2019.

In an effort to inform the Apex Community, we continue to respond to questions we receive, including:


What are the implications for my child(ren) who were enrolled at Apex for the upcoming 2018/2019 school year?

Unfortunately, you will need to enroll your child(ren) at an alternative school for the 2018/2019 school year. 

a) If your child attended another DCSD school in the 2017-2018 school year, they continue to have a spot at that same school.

b) If you have a new incoming Kindergartener in the 2018-2019 school year, your child has a guaranteed spot in their neighborhood school. 

c) If you are interested in changing schools or having your incoming Kindergartener attend a school other than their neighborhood school, you will need to access the open enrollment process through DCSD.  The DCSD second enrollment window opens on January 22, 2018.  The good news is that all schools experienced low enrollment in the 1st enrollment window, therefore you will most likely achieve your next choice in a school option for your child(ren). 


We earned Family Founding status, guaranteeing enrollment for my child(ren). Will my Founding Family status transfer to 2019?

Yes, those that have earned Founding Family status with guaranteed enrollment will carry to the 2019/2020 school year.  There will also be specific activities for those parents/guardians who are interested in earning Founding Family hours and have not done so yet.  Please check the Founding Family page on our website for opportunities and how to get started.


Can we still earn Founding Family hours to guarantee enrollment in the 2019-2020 school year?

Yes, families can still earn Founding Family status for the 2019 school year and there will be more opportunities to earn Founding Family hours. Additionally, any hours earned to date will “roll” forward, so please be sure you are signed up for our newsletter and consult our website.  Additional information will be posted as it becomes available (The website address is www.apexschool.co).


The construction for Apex Community School will continue and will be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2018.  As a result, the Apex Board of Directors has negotiated its use by another school during the 2018-19 school year.  This will allow payment toward construction costs before the Apex Community even occupies the building.  We expect to announce the lease of the building when negotiations are finalized. 

Will construction of the Apex Community School building continue?


Yes, the Phase II expansion to build out for 7th and 8th grades will be delayed by one year. Unless enrollment trends or demand dictate differently, we are still planning to expand the school and offering classes for 7th grade students in 2020-2021 and 8th grade classes in 2021-2022.

Does postponing the opening of Apex Community School change the plans for physical expansion of the school (i.e., Phase II expansion)?


We will be offering free ½ day morning Kindergarten, free ½ day afternoon Kindergarten, and tuition-based full day Kindergarten. The projected full-day Kindergarten tuition for 2019-2020 is estimated to be approximately $3,900 (depending on state per pupil funding). We will still have a monthly payment plan option or a 10% discount for full pre-payment of tuition received by September 1, 2019.

What will be the Kindergarten options for my child(ren) at Apex in 2019-2020?


The Apex Board of Directors continues to host online and in-person meetings in the coming months to provide updates and answer your questions. Will the Board continue to work on getting the word out about Apex?


We are community-based, Douglas County families and residents who first came together in our living rooms and coffee houses to develop an educational community that desires to be a part of the fabric of Castle Rock.  We absolutely want to include anyone interested in joining this amazing and fulfilling effort!  We need encouragers help get the word out. We need you to:

  • Learn more about what makes Apex unique so that you can share it with your    connections and circles confidently
  •  Utilize your social media networks to pass on newsletters, information and opportunities to learn about the school and its philosophy
  • Open your living room and invite a group of friends to hear about the school and how it may be the right choice for children
  • Volunteer to hang up signs/flyers in local businesses
  • Wear out some shoes canvassing neighborhoods with information and
  • Proudly post a lawn sign in your yard, just to name a few
